Instilling Discipline - Who Should Do It?

As couples get married and eventually have children, the responsibilities pile up. Many can attest to the huge challenge involved in raising children until the time they start school and up until they finish their degree.

In marriage, self discipline is very important for the spouses to adjust well to each other. But as they begin to have kids and become parents, they also need to instill the right discipline to their children. This should never be ignored because this is where the future character of the kids will depend.

Discipline has a lot to do with setting rules. These rules serve as guidelines for the children to ensure that they don't stray from the right and safer path of life. Although these may not be followed to the letter, at least they should be consistently enforced to make the children aware of what they should and should not do.

The problem now lies as to who should act as the disciplinarian in the home. Should it be the father or the mother? There is no correct answer to this. Both can assume equal roles in the aspect of discipline. It is just that some couples want their other half to have a bigger role in instilling discipline among their children. Most often, it's the father who assumes a greater role as a disciplinarian.

As fathers are known to have more authority in marriage, they are often expected to have a say as to what their kids should and should not do. The mothers, on the other hand, being feminine assume the role of supporter and a go-between person. In a family where the father is the disciplinarian, the mother usually acts as the person children turn to when they have issues in school and at home.

The responsibility is much bigger when only one parent single-handedly raises his or her child or children. This is true for divorced couples and those whose spouse are away from home most of the time due to work assignment or business. In this case, the custodial parent needs to be strong emotionally and physically in order to carry out his or her responsibilities with success. A stable support system will also be helpful.

But regardless of who has a bigger say when it comes to instilling discipline, a good point family and marriage counselors always make is to practice the positive type of discipline. This means staying away from the "don't" command which parents commonly use when teaching their kids. What positive discipline refers to is telling children the right way to do things such as "you have to throw your trash in the trash bin" instead of saying "don't throw your trash anywhere." So instead of saying "don't break your toys," it's better to teach them to "take care of your toys so you can have them for a long time."

Both parents are responsible for ensuring that their children grow up to be responsible and respectful individuals. And discipline plays an important part in this case. It doesn't matter who has a higher role in marriage because in the end what matters is how you mold your kids.
