When it comes time to buy that birthday present or just-because-I-love-you gift, you needn't break the bank. Little boys love imaginary play, and the best toys--regardless of price--are the ones that facilitate his pretend play. Use your own imagination when making a selection.
My grandson loves bugs. He has a collection of BIG bugs, and I found an inexpensive set of flash cards that we explore together.It's a wonderful opportunity for him to use his imagination--like when the bugs battle one another--and we also learn together.
Kids Toy Bin
Magnets. Kids (of all ages) love magnets. There are a variety of toys that feature magnets; for instance-Magneatos. That is one really cool toy that allows my grandson to create shapes, playgrounds, and monsters. There is a toy that features magnetic rods and balls (more imaginary monsters) and I've also found magnetic animals that can be mixed and matched. Even refrigerator magnets make for great fun. VTech has a set of alphabet magnets that can be inserted into the special block, and the letter and its sound is repeated. The cheap alphabet set is also fun, although you do have to be careful to watch out for the small magnets that can come loose.
Cars are also a staple of little boy play. Connor has a large plastic bin full of small cars. A lot of them are Hot Wheels, although some are not. Even though he has quite a collection, every time I buy a new one for him, his face lights up with joy. He likes to line them up, or crash them into one another. Bathtime requires at least a dozen cars.
Books are awesome. He's now old enough to know not to tear the pages, so you don't necessarily have to buy board books. One of Connor's favorite books is a seek-and-find book. Oh, the hours we spent 'reading' that book! He also loves Dr. Suess, and books of children's poetry. We do have some board books, as well. The "Great Big Book Of Trains" has great pictures of a variety of trains that I did not know existed.
Another of Connor's favorite toys is the spinning paint wheel. My home is extensively adorned with the art work of my all-time favorite artist. Other artistic mediums include crayons, chalk, markers, and water paints. He can express himself creatively, and it doesn't have to cost a lot.
The best gifts for any child aren't actually toys. They don't cost a dime. The best thing you can give a child is yourself. A child thrives on love and attention, so be generous when giving of yourself. The book is a good gift, but when you sit down and read it to your child, then it becomes an incredible gift. The cars are lots of fun, but when you are down on the floor with your child, crashing them and laughing, then you've given them a memory that is more valuable than the cars.
Use your imagination to discover ways to share your imagination with your child. For a child, that's the best possible gift.
