Fantastic Plastic; A Threat to Health and The Environment

Modern life is 'plasticized,' conveying enormous benefits to our lives in hygiene, convenience and colour. Plastics are everywhere within the home, in food packaging, cooking utensils, children's toys, building materials and household equipment. Plastics result from the petrochemical industry (non-sustainable and environmentally disastrous) and are environmentally hazardous throughout their lifecycle; starting with their production which involves large-scale pollution, releasing potent chemicals such as dioxins, phthalates and toxic metals into our environment; and affecting human, animal, plant and aquatic life. Plastic is given different qualities through treatment with a cocktail of other terrifying chemicals, all of which can leach out of the individual products and into air (you know that new plastic smell?), water or something in close proximity to the plastic. And then what do we do?

Kids Toy Bin

We wrap our food up in it! Most supermarket food is placed on polystyrene trays, packed and smothered in cling film, displayed in glossy punnets, or preserved in tins lined with plastics. Next we eat the food (and possibly the leached plastic chemicals) and chuck the packaging into the bin. From here the plastics stay with us forever, being largely un-biodegradable. Tiny fragments of plastics are accumulating in the Pacific Ocean and wreaking havoc throughout the food chain. If the plastics are burnt, then they release a stream of unpronounceable and highly toxic chemicals into the environment (posing a huge risk to the health of fire-fighters, and possibly proving fatal to occupants of burning buildings who inhale PVC fumes). Plastics are quite literally a problem that will not go away.

Kids Toy Bin

They appear to be so useful and hygienic, but can seep dangerous chemicals into the foods which they come into contact with, possibly exacerbated by heat (think oven-safe and microwaveable packaging). Recent studies across America (including the University of Rochester and the National Centre for Environmental Health) have suggested that phthalates (chemicals found in plastics such as Clingfilm, vinyl and plastic bags) can cross the placenta, damaging the sexual development of male children (this is also recognised in other mammals) resulting in physical and possibly behavioural problems. A team of Swedish researchers have linked the household use of plastics to an increase in eczema, asthma and other allergies, and there is concern that the immature bodies of children and babies are at increased risk of toxic damage and build up of plastic chemicals, found in food packaging, toys and drinking bottles. (Several types of plastics have been phased out of use for toys of young children due to their health-risk). Further research has indicated a link between the use of plastics around food and the development of certain cancers such as breast cancer, immune problems, and even infertility.

So what can you do to reduce the amount of plastic in your life?

1) Ditch plastic bags, and always carry cloth bags and baskets; for fairly traded organic cotton bags try http://www.bishopstontrading.co.uk Keep bags in your car, and fold cotton bags up small in your handbag.

2) Chuck out the cling film and use unbleached brown paper and grease-proof paper or recycled aluminium foil to pack sandwiches and store foods in the fridge. Buy unbleached paper bags at http://www.soilassociation.org The paper bags can be reused several times and eventually composted or recycled with your newspapers.

3) Have your vegetables delivered to you to cut down on supermarket packaging; http://www.riverford.co.uk mostly use unbleached paper bags, cardboard punnets and boxes, cutting out a vast amount of packaging and waste. Ask your supermarket to provide unbleached paper bags, or take your own; my local shops are quite used to my strange behaviour by now! Try using local markets, fruit and veg shops or your farmers market and take your own baskets and bags; I get sellers to tip stuff straight into my bag if they do not have paper bags. A further bonus is that less stuff ends up in your bin, and you don't spend an hour unpacking everything.

4) Drink tap water in stead of mineral water, and send kids to school with a drink in a metal sports container rather than plastic bottles. If you can't bear the tap water, then buy the larger 5 litre mineral water bottles, or buy a water filter.

5) Go shabby Chic; spring-clean all of the plastic stuff out of the kitchen and invest in wooden spoons and chopping boards (both of which draw bacteria into the wood and kill it), have some fun choosing ceramic mixing bowls and other kitchen stuff. Look on Ebay for old-fashioned stoneware jelly moulds, and other traditional kitchen things. Don't forget, Christmas is coming, so you can ask for some new things as presents.

6) Sometimes, having children seems to involve surrounding yourself with mountains of multi-coloured plastic, but with some careful buying you can choose safer products for your family and friends, especially for tiny vulnerable new babies. Look out for traditional rag dolls, and knitted woollen teddies, or visit http://www.naturalnursery.co.uk Buy young children wooden toys (www.borndirect.co.uk ) which can be safely chewed and sucked, discourage use of dummies (I know it isn't that easy, I have been there) and source PVC-free, and glass baby bottles from http://www.greenbabyco.com Also you may wish to avoid chemical 'fleece' blankets and go for natural fibres http://www.borndirect.co.uk

7) Choose natural fibres in general. 'Fleece' materials may be extremely cheap, but are made of plastic derivatives (some are made of recycled plastic bottles). Synthetic clothes are an environmental nightmare because not only do they release dangerous chemicals during their processing, but they are almost indestructible, do not biodegrade and burn to release noxious chemicals back into the environment. In fact clothing is another area which you may wish to think about. It is worth considering that school clothes are thought to be some of the most chemically toxic items of clothing which you can buy. I know it is expensive, but go for real cotton, wool, linen and other natural fibres where possible.

Cutting down of the amount of plastic in your life will help you to eat more healthily (lots of local fruit and veg), give you a great excuse for a clear-out and a shopping spree, and help you work toward a more sustainable, and healthful lifestyle. There has been so much concern in recent years about the negative impact of 'plastic living' on our health, that there is plenty of choice when looking for alternatives.
Until next time, happy shopping!

The Fastest Way to Declutter Your Home

Introduction

Kids Toy Bin

This article provides you tips about how to declutter your home fast. For every person, the home is a sweet place, however cluttered it may be. It can be a sweeter place if it is kept in a neat and organized manner. The most apparent ill effect of a cluttered home is the loss of face in front of the visitors. A poorly kept house is like an ugly underbelly. In addition, it will lead to the effects that are more serious. The environment in which a person lives has a profound effect on the psychological well-being of the person. If the house is in bad shape, it can trigger negative thoughts.

Kids Toy Bin

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

A majority of the people have the habit of cleaning the house once in certain period. It can be once in a week, once in a month, once in six months, once in a year, and, god forbid, once in several years. However, this is not the ideal way to go. Not everyone will have time to declutter an entire house every week. A good option will be to allot a certain time, for example, one hour or 30 minutes, for tidying up some part of the house every week or every three or four days, depending on the availability of time. Never go on a cleaning spree, although you may be inspired to do so by the neat appearance of the places you have cleaned. The first tip for declutter your home fast would be to slowly and steadily clean the rooms of the house one by one regularly.

Where to Get Rid of the Unwanted

You, or any other member of the family, may have acquired a number of items over a period. Look around you, and conduct an audit. Are all the items necessary now? You can categorize the items into three. First, there are items that nobody wants at present. Even the person who brought the item does not know why he or she has brought it. Such items, if they are utterly useless, should have their rightful place in the garbage bin. Second, there are some other items such as old shirts or an unused tape recorder, which may be of use to the needy people. You can donate them to charity organizations. Third, there are certain items that only require a displacement within the house. It just has to be placed in another room. Just categorizing the cluttering items will not help you declutter your home fast; you must act accordingly to keep your home clean and neat!

Conclusion

Decluttering is a continuous process - just like cluttering. Therefore, you have to keep a timetable and stick to it religiously for decluttering regularly. Once you become used to it, it will become part of your habit. Following the above-mentioned suggestions will help you declutter your home fast.

The Fresh Beat Band - Nick Jrs Popular Show

Nick Jr. and Sprout have the best shows for kids. The Wiggles and Yo Gabba Gabba are probably my daughter's favorites, but she just discovered The Fresh Beat Band, and now that has taken all precedence. Her exact words were, "I like this show because of the music, and I like Kiki. She looks like me." She doesn't really look like Kiki, but in her eyes if she does because of the same hair color, so be it. I think it's awesome that she can relate to a character on television who is a positive role model.

Kids Toy Bin

For those of you who are not familiar with The Fresh Beat Band, it is a show about four teens named Kiki, Marina, Twist, and Shout who go to music school together. They all play musical instruments, and they know how to get your kids moving with their dancing. In each episode, they encounter a problem but they work together to find a solution. During the process of it all, they sing pop songs and dance. The lyrics are catchy and easy to follow, and it's just a fun and educational show to watch. It might not teach your child the alphabet or the colors like Mickey Mouse or Sesame Street, but it does reinforce teamwork and being active.

Kids Toy Bin

It's geared towards preschoolers, but I know some of my older nephews and nieces who are in grade school follow them. If they're all together in one house, and I turn on The Fresh Beat Band, they will start running to the toy bin to grab an instrument like the guitar, microphone, or drums. It's also a show where parents won't get easily annoyed. I can attest to this because I find myself humming along to the songs. It beats watching SpongeBob or Dora! Nick Jr. has also had famous guests featured in some of the episodes. In the "Band in a Jam" episode, pop star Ne-Yo performed his famous song "One in a Million" as well as the opening theme to The Fresh Beat Band.

The Fresh Beat Band are played by actors who really do play the musical instruments that their character plays. It's not fake acting. Kiki, played by Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, can play the guitar and violin. Twist's main interest, played by Jon Beavers, is hip-hop and is the DJ, rapper, and beat boxer in the show. Marina, played by Tara Perry (formerly Shayna Rose) can play the drums. Lastly, Shout, played by Thomas Hobbson can play the piano. It's great to know the four bandmates are all musically talented in real life.

What would be great to see is if The Fresh Beat Band will go on tour. Yo Gabba Gabba is touring in my hometown this year, and so I'm hoping Nick Jr. will have The FBB go on tour as well. I think the young kids and their older siblings will equally be excited especially because the majority of the actors are still in their 20s. They will be able to relate to actual people performing instead of costumed characters. How awesome would it be to have famous singers collaborate with them too just like Ne-Yo did.

Household Projects For Kids in Every Season - Summer

Summertime is a very exciting time for kids. With school being out and the weather at it's warmest, kids are itching to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Unfortunately - Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate, so not everyday is all blue skies. When you end up with the kids stuck inside on a rainy summer day - pulling out a fun, hands-on craft project for them to complete is a great idea. With these simple craft projects, you can keep kids busy for the afternoon even if they are stuck indoors.

Kids Toy Bin

Keeping craft projects simple can be extremely helpful to both you and the kids. Kids love to decorate and personalize their own items, and any craft store can supply you with tons of blank, customizable items. Since our project is summer themed - choosing a plain white visor or baseball hat (available for a very low cost at any craft store) and purchasing fabric markers, glitter glue, and even small gemstones will give kids the opportunity to create their own custom headgear to wear out on the next sunny day. Craft stores often have big seasonal sales, so when it's nearing the end of a season, you can usually stock up on supplies like these to have in the house in case a rainy day comes along. Things like fabric markers and glitter glue can work for a number of different projects, so having them in the house already can save you a trip to the store in the future.

Kids Toy Bin

If you have a little bit of time on your hands as a parent, a fun activity that you can do for the kids is to create a scavenger hunt in the house. Giving them an incentive to complete the hunt is also a great idea. For example, give them a list of summery things to find in the house (i.e. a flip flop, a bikini top, suntan lotion, a beach towel with blue in it, etc...) and when they bring all of the items back to you, they'll get lunch or an afternoon snack. If you have younger kids, making the list short and sweet will help them from getting too frustrated with the project, but if kids are older - making the list longer and more specific will help them to the take on the challenge. Giving kids a pillowcase to take along on their search will help them from losing anything during the hunt. Keeping the scavenger hunt summer themed will let kids enjoy the season even when they can't play outside.

On the contrary, if you do have a nice day on your hands and you're still looking to keep the kids entertained, both of these projects can be taken outdoors. Setting kids up at an outdoor table to create their hats will allow them to immediately wear the finished product whenever they're done. You can easily transform the scavenger hunt to cater to both indoors and outdoors by adding items to the list like "a pink flower" and "a sandbox toy". Keeping in mind all of the items in and around your home will ensure that the kids will be able to find everything that's on the list.

So whether your kids are young or old, they will enjoy partaking in a fun, creative, hands-on project for the afternoon. Giving these ideas to a babysitter is also a great idea since keeping kids busy while you're out of the house is important, too. Take a look around your house and see what type of craft supplies you already have. By adding items to the mix that are already in your craft storage bin, you can spice up these projects even more. By allowing your kids to have some fun and be creative - they'll enjoy themselves even if their perfect summer day is compromised by the rain.

Children Bedroom Organization - Helping Kids Get Organized

A child's room is disorganized either because of a lack of knowledge and know-how by the child, or by choice. A child is naturally full of curiosity and naturally places items in the most convenient place for them, so that they can get to their next curiosity... and the cycle continues. Therefore, a child will keep a cluttered lifestyle until they know better and until it serves them better to do otherwise. To keep a child's room organized, the child needs the tools and the know-how to organize; this is where the parent comes in.

Kids Toy Bin

The Approach: Choice and Reward Within

Kids Toy Bin

As a parent, it is important to guide the child without criticizing, but instead with positive reinforcement that allows your child to find the reward from within. This allows the child to learn to choose an organized lifestyle for their own personal reasons -- instead of for external reasons. For example, if they are keeping an organized room because of a promised treat or gift, or because it makes the parent happy, what happens when those rewards are not present? The child should take care of his or her responsibilities because it makes them happy.

Now, this doesn't mean that you can't withhold a daily treat or a weekly gift if your child doesn't take care of responsibilities. This is like "real life": if you don't go to work, you don't get paid; if you don't pay your electric bill, you don't get electricity. They need to know that these consistent items are earned, like a paycheck for adults. If the child has television or video game time at a certain time every day, they should get to have this at the same time every time, unless they haven't earned it.

Note however, that this is not a reward, but a normal consistent item that the child receives for doing a normal consistent behavior. They are not getting a treat for cleaning their room or punished for not cleaning their room; they basically get what they get. So, when they ask (and they should ask) for their television time, you ask, "Is your room done?" -- letting them answer their own question. If they don't want to clean their room, then they don't want to play video games, watch T.V., or have their daily treat. It's all about choice.

It is also very important to not be critical, but instead to praise the child when they do a good job. Let the child find the reward from within. The child should get responses that let them know that they should be happy with their own self and not happy because mommy and daddy are happy. For example, you can say, "You did it. You put your toys away all by yourself!" or "You are so good at (blank)." A response like "good girl" is a response that leaves the child's self-esteem dependent on the response, instead of the action or behavior. They begin to look for these general responses, to know that they are good in your eyes. By following these steps consistently, your child will make the choice to be organized.

The Approach: Routines and Consistency

The parent needs to consistently help the child get organized. Show and teach your child the routines necessary to take responsibility for their own area and to keep organized. It is important that the training is done everyday and that the kid is held responsible everyday. Start small and make sure the child understands what needs to be done before holding the child accountable. It begins with showing how to put things away, and then by guiding the child, and then by taking off the training wheels. For example, start with having your child put their dirty clothes in the hamper, reminding the child to do so, and then holding the child accountable. Consistency and routine is the key to having your child consistently stay organized.

Tools:

This starts with giving your child the tools to organize. The tools give the child a consistent place for items to go and the ability to put things away. These are some tools the child should have:

Closet Doubler These extra closet rods hook onto an existing rod to create a double hang feature. This brings the closet rod down to their level
Hooks mounted at a height the child can reach Some clothing like jackets and sweaters, that don't need to be washed every time they are worn, can be hung on hooks.
Clear shoe boxes Use clear shoe boxes to store shoes that are not being worn the next day.
Labeled or colored bins or boxes. Use boxes and bins that are labeled with a picture of the items that go in the bin. Use boxes and bins that are colored to organize similar items. For example, toys in a blue bin, books in a white one, crafts in a red one, and so on.
Hamper without a lid Keep a hamper out in the open (out of the closet) in the child's room
A check list (for school age) Helps prioritize.
Using the Tools:

Then the child needs to learn to use the tools. Here are some methods to show your child how to organize (remember consistency is the key):

Preparing for the next day Have your child choose their clothing from their closet and place it on a designated hook. Have your child place their shoes for the next day under the bed or with the next day's outfit. All shoes not being used currently, or for the next day, should be in clear stackable shoe boxes. Have your child prepare their backpack for school and place on the hook.
Arriving back at home Have your child put their jacket, backpack, and hat on designated hooks Have your child tell you or write it down in their to-do-list what they will be doing (i.e. snack time, then homework, video games, play outside, shower, clean up, get ready for tomorrow, and sleep). (This will teach prioritizing and instill the normal routines that should happen if responsibilities are achieved.)
Annual Purging Use Christmas or another day the child receives new items as a motivator for making decisions to make room for new items. Ask them which items they would like to give to a sibling, friend, or a family in need. Don't force the issue; just let the child know that if they don't have the shelf space, they don't have the room for a new item.
Toys Take pictures of categorized items, like dolls or Hot Wheels, and put the picture on the front of bins or boxes. This is usually the hardest for the child to get a consistent grasp on, so stay consistent in checking this.

If you teach your child how to organize and teach them how to take responsibility for their own area, it will traverse from the bedroom to school, work, and life in general. Stay consistent and eventually your child will do the same. It may be a hard road, but laying a good foundation for your child, and saving your sanity, makes it all worth it.

The Teen-Girl Zone - Tools to Organize Teenage Girls' Rooms

So, you have bravely decided to roam where more faint-hearted mothers dare not: The Teen-Girl Zone, a.k.a. your daughter's room! You want to help your teenage girls get organized, but you're not sure where to start. Well, as a professional organizer and mother of four teenage girls, I have a few tools to help you get your teenage girls get organized.

Let me encourage you by reminding you that learning any skill takes repetition, reward and coaching. I also have a small word of warning-if you have a rocky relationship with your teenage girl, this could become a bit of a power struggle. You don't want to come between her clutter and emotions. May I suggest that you do a little research and determine what "organizational type" your daughter is. Organizing for Your Brain Type, by Lana Nakone is a valuable resource that will help you decide whether your teenage girl is a people person, innovator, maintainer or prioritizer. Knowing how she needs to organize may reduce your struggles in the Teen-Girl Zone! What is the most fun schedule to get organized? Get in the Zone!

Kids Toy Bin

In the Zone

When you help a teenage girl organize her space, start with a few questions:

1. What do you love about your room?
2. What do you dislike about your room?
3. What things are in the right place that you definitely don't want to move?
4. What do you do in your room? (Sleep, dress, read, homework, etc.)
5. Do you like the color and general arrangement of your room?

Knowing the answers to these questions helps get you in the zone and guides the organizational process, helping you see how you can avoid struggle. These questions also give you an opportunity to uncover possible areas for incentive. Would your daughter enjoy new bedding or painting her room? Perhaps you can offer those as rewards to her when she has organized her room and maintained it for one month.

Prepared with the right information, you will have success in the zone.

Zoning

To a local government, zoning means determining how an area is to be used or developed-that's the kind of zoning you are going to help your teenage girl with. You know what zoning means to the average teenager! It's your job to help your teenage girl use these organizing tools to transform teenage zoning to space-use zoning.

Zone One-The Sleep Zone

It may seem obvious, but your daughter will be sleeping in the sleep zone, which includes the area immediately around your daughter's bed. You should ask her what she needs to get a good night's sleep. Make a list of those items and make sure that those items are in her sleep zone.

Some items to consider in the sleep zone are: the bed, pillows, blankets, an alarm clock, and nightstand. Depending on your daughter's habits, she may need a good lamp on her nightstand for reading; reading material; tissues; a water glass; paper and pencil; and chap stick. If there is no room for a nightstand, consider providing your daughter with a basket that can hold the things she needs that can be stowed under the bed or on a nearby shelf. A floor lamp or a lamp that can be clamped to her headboard may be good alternatives for lighting.

Here's a tip that can instantly make your daughter's room look orderly: have her make her bed every day. If this is a habit she has never developed, you could offer to buy her new bedding if she consistently makes it every day for a set period of them - one month is usually long enough to establish a new habit.

The last area to work on in the sleep zone is the space under the bed. Pull every thing out that may be lurking there. Sort through what needs to be kept in the sleep zone, what needs to be stored elsewhere, and what can be thrown away. My girls store bulky items like sleeping bags, overnight bags, and folding chairs under the bed.

Zone Two-The Clothes Zone

The Clothes Zone will probably take the most time of any zone in your teen girl's room to organize. Make sure you have time to complete this project in one session; it could take up to three hours to organize, depending on how many clothes your teen has. You will need storage boxes or bags and cleaning supplies.

I have created a process to help you get your teenage girl's clothes organized. Here are my seven steps to Clothes Zone Heaven!

Step One: Take all of her clothes out of her closet and dresser drawers and create categorized piles.

Pile 1-This season's clothes, shoes and accessories that you are wearing now. Keep only clothes that fit and that you like and use.

Pile 2-Out-of-season clothes, shoes and accessories that you are sure will fit next year and that you like and will continue to use/wear.

Pile 3-All clothes, shoes and accessories that are too small, you don't like, are stained or are beyond repair. (Bag up items to pass on to a sibling or friend. Or, you may want to take usable items to a consignment store or charity. Throw away everything that's in unusable condition!)

Step Two: Take out all games, memorabilia, toys and stuff. Decide what you will keep and what can be given away. Anything in poor repair or missing pieces should be thrown away.

Step Three: Clean the closets and drawers thoroughly while they are empty. Wipe down walls and shelves, and then vacuum the floor and cobwebs along the ceiling.

Step Four: Place this season's clothes, shoes and accessories back into the closet or dresser drawers. Hang or fold all clothes neatly. Make sure that jackets are buttoned or zipped. Group clothes by category: pants; shirts; skirts; and dresses together. Hang belts on hooks or hangers. Consider a shoe organizer, if your teen-girl has lots of shoes.

Step Five: Place off-season clothes, shoes and accessories in a clear plastic bin and store under the bed or in the attic. If your closet is big enough, you may store your office season clothes and other items in the back of your closet.

Step Six: Place all games, toys and memorabilia back in your closet on a shelf or easy to see place. If memorabilia is worth keeping, it is worth keeping well, so make sure that your teen has an appropriately sized box to store all items neatly. You will also want to take this time to help your daughter consider what items are truly worth saving and which things she might let go.

Step Seven: Now that all of your teen-girl's clothing and other belongings are neatly organized you can easily see what items she may need. Make a list and plan to purchase and replace needed items.

Now that you have completed the seven steps to Clothes Zone Heaven all your teen girl needs to do is maintain the new order. I have found that it goes well when my daughters take a few moments each week to make sure that they are keeping things stored properly. Remind your daughter to give you items that they try on and no longer fit or that become stained or otherwise un-wearable. Dealing with items as they fall out of use is easier than working through an entire closet. Also, encourage her to immediately put clothes away that she decides not to wear. It takes seconds to hang up one outfit. It can take 15 minutes or more to sort through and put away a pile of clothes!

Finally, you will want to make plans to revisit the Clothes Zone each season to repeat all seven steps.

Zone Three-The Study Zone

Zone Three is really a matter of preference. You need to consider where your daughter usually does her homework. If she most often does her homework in her room, not the kitchen table or sitting in the bonus room, then she needs a homework zone established in her room.

If she prefers sitting at desk, then have her sit down at her desk and think through all the supplies that she needs while she is working there. Ask her what she uses every day or weekly. When I am working with a client, I give items that receive regular use what I call prime real estate. Anything not related to the tasks your daughter does sitting at the desk, do not get to stay there. Keepsakes and memorabilia must be "containerized" and stored elsewhere. If your daughter prefers to work sitting on her bed or the floor, maybe all she needs is a basket of supplies that she can pull out when she is working. Next, make sure her Homework Zone is well lighted and that she has a comfortable chair.

You will also want to make sure that this zone is well supplied, include: a calendar, clear sheet protectors, notebooks, note pads, as well as pencils and pens with a carrying case.

Zoned Out

Now that you have worked through the three main zones of your daughter's room, you will almost always have items that don't fit into any of the zones. You may place these in a bin and go through them to consider whether you will keep them. Here's the test. Ask whether the item is used daily or weekly. If it is used that often, then it can stay.

With memorabilia and other items left, ask:

- Do you want to display the item-- Should the item be stored or placed in a container to keep it in good condition-- Do you want to place the item in a scrapbook or photo album-- Is there someone with whom you can share the item-

With collections ask:

- On a scale from one to ten, how much do you love this collection-- Do you need the entire collection or just a few favorites-- If the collection is important to you, are you keeping it well and where it can be enjoyed-If you both decide that a collection will be kept, assign it a shelf or container. When the space is full, attempt to purge the collection to make room for new items.

A final word of encouragement-if your daughter (or you!) struggle to let things go, try storing an item for six months. Agree that the item will be given or thrown away, if your daughter has not asked for it during that time. Remember this is a life skill! If your daughter learns to manage her possessions now, she will have less stress and be equipped to manage her own home some day.

20 Tips to Save Money This Holiday Season

It's no secret that many families are on extra tight budgets this holiday season, mostly as a result of the Wall Street fiasco, the effects of which reverberated around the world and we're all still feeling the after shocks.

Kids Toy Bin

As a self-employed contractor, I'm in the same boat and can speak from experience. I'm in Australia. I have friends in New Zealand, Singapore, the U.S., and the U.K. and family in Norway. Everyone has stories to tell of people losing their jobs, their homes, businesses closing, contracts disappearing, invoices not being paid, and how this year's holiday season is going to be a very small "affair" in comparison to years gone by. Well, it might not be the "jolliest" of seasons this year, but here are some tips to help make your dollar go further and enable your family to partake of the season.

Kids Toy Bin

1. Plan ahead - make a list so you do not shop on impulse. Know exactly WHAT you have to buy (presents, cards, food) and work out how much you can afford to spend on each - then stick to it.

2. Shop Around for the Best Price - if you are on the internet, do some price checking online. Save your petrol and ring various local stores for prices on the same items. Sometimes you can buy something cheaper online, even factoring in the postage costs!

3. Pay Cash - obviously not a possibility if you're buying online, but many stores will offer discounts if you pay cash on large items. In addition, when you pay cash you avoid high interest rates on your credit cards and you also tend to spend less when you use "real money" instead of cards.

4. Save. I know for some families that is a ridiculous notion at the moment - they're in debt up to their ears and have nothing left over to save. However, if you can forgo an unnecessary item or buy a cheaper version of it, the money saved can go into a jar or a savings account and while a few cents here and a couple of dollars there doesn't sound like much, it will add up and go towards anything you need.

5. Manage your Debts - if you are falling behind in loan or credit card payments, don't wait until the company sets the debt collectors on to you - contact them and work out a new payment plan until your financial situation improves. When you contact them first and are honest about your situation and willing to work out a plan whereby you can still afford to pay them something, most companies are very accommodating. They'd rather get paid something than nothing at all.

6. Christmas Cards - review your list. Do you really need to send all those people a card? Consider sending postcards (cheaper) or better still, an online e-card. Many online card companies offer an excellent range of free e-cards for all occasions. One very creative family I know cuts their old cards in half and uses the front part of the card as a greeting postcard, writing their message on the back and posting it off. This not only provides you with a free seasonal postcard to send but it is very environmentally friendly! If you must buy cards, buy them from a discount store. Why pay for a box of cards you can get for ?

7. Need to make phone calls? It's not always possible given the number of people ringing internationally at Christmas time, but if you can, try to call at a time of day that is off-peak for you.

8. Gift Wrapping - again, shop from a discount store - your wrapping paper is usually going to end up torn and in the bin anyway. You can buy plain coloured paper and a bit of pretty string to tie it and still present a lovely wrapped gift. You don't have to buy the fanciest paper and all the fancy ribbons and bows to go with it. You can buy "curling" string that you run your scissors along and turns the string ends into lovely "curls". You can have your children paint pictures on spare paper and wrap gifts in that. You can also recycle magazines - pretty glossy photo pages from magazines also makes a uniquely wrapped gift. If YOU receive presents, encourage your family to open them carefully and save the paper - you can use it next year.

9. Make your Own Gift Tags - You can take a small piece of matching paper and fold it into a card and write To and From on it yourself. Or you can give your children some paper and scraps and let them be creative and make their own gift tags. Old Christmas cards also make excellent gift tags.

10. If you need to buy new decorations, shop from a discount store. Cheaper decorations can look just as pretty and effective and you won't cry if you break one! If you can, try and keep a few dollars aside to buy decorations at the after Christmas sales and you will then have them ready for next year and have bought them at a fraction of their original price. Don't forget children love arts and crafts - why not let them create some new decorations!

11. Trees - not only is this eco friendlier but it is a lot cheaper and easier to use an artificial Christmas tree each year rather than a real one. There are different varieties and sizes - something for everyone. Grab one after Christmas when they are on sale and you will have it for next year... or start saving now to buy one next year if you can't afford to spend on sales this year.

12. Christmas Fare - You don't HAVE to have turkey this year... chicken will do and still tastes nice with cranberry sauce! You can spice up your simple vegetable varieties with sauces and sliced almonds. Buy your shopping at cheaper stores - it really doesn't matter if your food comes in "Christmas" wrapping - it's what is inside that counts. Keep sales vouchers, flyers and coupons and use them. Buy store brands - despite the fact it might be against your principles, if you're broke and desperate, these are excellent value for money and will save you $$'s. For non-perishables that you can buy in advance and store, buy a bit each week leading up to Christmas - tinned puddings and custard powder, nuts...

13. Keeping the kids entertained - Movies: well, if you're like most, taking the family to the cinema this year may be off the menu, but depending where you live - whether it's summer or winter - there are activities you can do that don't cost the earth. So maybe you can't make it to the cinema - there are online places, like NetFlix, that lets you rent DVD's online and they don't charge late return fees. They also have a 30 day free trial so you could use this! DVD Rental stores are desperate for customers these days given the arrival of places like Netflix, not to forget the popularity of cable TV, Foxtel, etc., so you can rent the latest movies for a fraction of the price of seeing it in cinema.

14. More keeping the kids entertained - Free Light show - take a drive around your suburbs this Christmas and especially the richer suburbs and let your kids enjoy some amazing light displays. If your town has a special light display, take them into town to see it.

15. Yet more entertainment - again depending on which part of the world you live in, your town may have Christmas pageants. These are free. Take your kids to watch the parade and enjoy some free Christmas cheer.

16. Even More entertainment - You've been busy all year, and how often have you had time to spend with your kids? I'm talking quality time. I'm talking sitting down and playing old fashioned board games with them. Scrabble. Monopoly. If you don't have these games (and shame on you), then ask your neighbours or check with your local library. (Yes, some libraries do stock games.) Teach your kids cards! You know, in years to come when your kids have grown up and somebody asks them what was their best Christmas... no, it won't be the year you spent ,000 on the fancy thingamy jig they had to have... it will be the year you were poor and spent all your time playing with them!

17. Get in the Mood - you must have a Christmas carol CD or tape of some kind in your house - play it. It will help set the mood and it costs you nothing. Otherwise, tune your radio into a station that is playing carols.

18. Make "preparing for Christmas" a family affair. Whether it be decorating the tree, wrapping gifts, or preparing food - involve the entire family this year. Have fun. Make jokes. Sing carols. Yes - pretend you're the Brady Bunch - it won't kill you for one day of the year! Your kids will love you for it. It will give you the true feeling of the Christmas spirit and it won't cost you a cent. And if you're finding it hard to be "jolly" - well, remember that old saying: Fake it until you make it!

19. Invent a new family Christmas tradition - will it be a game... a craft activity... or some other new activity you do as a family this year? Maybe you can start a new Christmas scrapbook - you can all write in it your thoughts this season, include notes and photos, and add to it every year.

20. Go out and do something for those worse off than yourself. Nothing makes you feel more special than when you do something for others. Maybe it is just cleaning up and donating unused toys to charity, or visiting the lonely in an old people's home, or helping out at a food kitchen preparing Christmas Meals for the homeless... if you are suffering this year due to unfortunate circumstances, take the focus off yourself and your family, by getting involved in doing something special for those who are even more worse off than yourself. I guarantee this will give you the spirit of Christmas!

Make Travelling With Children on a Long Car Journey Easy and Fun!

Essential things for a long car journey with children

Kids Toy Bin

First of all is wet wipes! Even if you don't eat or drink in the car children can get messy. Wet wipes are brilliant as they quickly clean up grubby hands, faces and anything else that needs a wipe!

Kids Toy Bin

A rubbish bin for the car! Not a full size wheely bin, although after some car journeys it might feel like you need one, but something smaller than can be sealed to get rid of anything yucky that smells. Old plastic tubs are perfect. Save your ice cream tubs through the year and remember to put one in the car for the journey back too! They're perfect for putting dirty wet wipes in, bits of fruit peel or dropped sandwiches in as well as other bits of wrappers and rubbish you'll create on the way!

Paper tissues are useful too for drying up snotty noses or wiping hands dry after a wet wipe!

Refreshments are essential. Even if you're planning to stop at services on the motorway you'll find it so much easier and cheaper if you just pack some food and nibbles for the journey. Packing their favourite sandwiches is always a good idea and taking some fresh fruit is always a good idea. Take bottles of water for them to sip on the journey, find bottles with sports caps will mean that they spill less too. If you're traveling in summer then a cool bag is a good idea for keeping everything fresh and cool. You can take chocolate but prepared for lots of cleaning up.

At each services stop make sure everyone uses the loo! Let the kids run around a bit if there's a play area so they get rid of some of the pent up energy they'll have from being cooped up in a car.

Taking plenty of activities for the children so they're kept busy in the car during a long journey is as essential as anything else. Take music or even talking books for the in car CD player or if you've got portable CD players then each child could listen to something different which can stop arguments about who picks what you listen to.

Having some crayons and colouring or quizzes is good too. For older children you can play lots of games which encourage them to spot what you're driving past. Younger children will appreciate some toys and perhaps songs too! Keep a couple of items back for part way through the journey so they don't do everything at once! Number plate games where you may up sentences using the letters of the number plates you see if good fun and will produce some great sillyness that will take their mind off the journey! There are even special books for keeping children busy on car journeys.
